RREUSE calls for binding reuse targets as Europe confronts record Waste Levels

RREUSE – Reuse And Recycling European Union Social Enterprises is one of the three European networks that make up the WISESHIFT project. They have recently published a new report urging EU policy makers to adopt binding, ambitious and independent targets for reuse and preparation for reuse:

Europe’s material footprint has been growing rapidly. In 2022, an average EU resident purchased over 32 kg of electrical and electronic equipment and 19 kg of textiles, and generated nearly 5 tons of waste.

Reuse activities are essential in the EU’s tackling of the growing waste crisis. They can displace the consumption of new items, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions. When implemented by social economy operators, they also create jobs for individuals who face barriers in the labour market and alleviate material poverty by making essential goods available at low or even no cost.

The report also emphasises the need to set separate targets for reuse and preparation for reuse, both general and specific to each product, in order to maximise environmental and social benefits.

RREUSE launched the report during the European Week of Waste Reduction a key event promoting sustainable waste management practices across Europe. The report conclude with a set of policy recommendations for the policymakers to consider as they shape the Circular Economy Act, the revised WEEE Directive, and other relevant measures at the EU level.
